Imperial War Museums 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund – Commission Development Workshop

Date: Monday 15th July
Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: Fazeley Studios, 191 Fazeley St, Deritend, Birmingham B5 5SE

The IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund is a five-year, £2.5 million national partnership programme of artist commissions inspired by the heritage of conflict, running from 2021-2026. Led by Imperial War Museums (IWM), the programme was created following the success of 14-18 NOW, the official UK arts programme for the First World War centenary.

IWM are interested in engaging a commissioning partner for a large-scale artist/s commission project to be developed and delivered in the Birmingham/West Midlands area in 2026. Through a facilitated conversation hosted with Culture Central, IWM would like to establish a commissioning opportunity in the region, in consultation with local organisations and artists.

In particular, IWM would like to explore the following questions

  • How do you feel a large-scale artistic commission of national and international significance could best serve the local arts sector?

  • What do you think is important for your audiences for a commission of this scale?

About the IWM 14-18 Now Legacy Fund
Over the past three years, IWM has been working in partnership with a diverse range of cultural organisations from across the UK to commission over 20 ambitious new artworks. The programme has foregrounded underrepresented stories, particularly focusing on subjects relevant to partners’ regional or national contexts. The artworks have been created by world-leading and emerging contemporary artists at different scales and in a broad range of artistic disciplines, including acrobatic performance, video installation, graphic novel, and socially engaged practice. Each has been supported by embedded community programming which speaks to the partner’s local networks and ambitions.

The IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund commissions have forged new opportunities for artistic engagement, bringing art to audiences in new and relevant ways by connecting people, places and experiences, and promoting cultural dialogue as the sector recovers from the wide-reaching impacts of COVID-19.
